Painting Tile

We are excited to share our painting tile kit we found on Amazon. The kit is by Rustoleum and we always love their products! Below are the supplies followed by steps.

Supplies:

Rustoleum Kit
3/8 inch roller
1/4 inch roller
Paint Tray

Step 1: Prepare the Area
Once you have all the supplies ready to go, you want to start prepping. Before you even use the cleaner that is provided, you want to prep the area. Sweep the area to make sure there is no dust or hair because that will stick to the paint. You also want to tape off the area with painters tape (all around any area the floor touches). Once you do this, you are ready to apply the cleaning solution. Here is what my floor looked like after I taped it and cleaned it:

Step 2: Cleaning Solution
The rustoleum kit comes with a cleaner to prep the surface. I got a cloth that I could use once I applied the cleaner. I poured the cleaner all along the entire area I was painting. I let it sit for 5 minutes to allow it time to pick everything up. I then used the cloth to “scrub” the area, getting any dirt or things stuck to the tile up. I took a towel after I was done scrubbing to dry the area. Now we are ready for the first coat!

Step 3: Base Coat
First, take out the step 1 base coat from the rustoleum kit. This is the first coat that we will be applying to the floor. I took out both rollers at this point. It is important to note, when I first started painting I wasn’t as strategic as I should have been. I am used to painting walls where the starting point doesn’t matter. You want to make sure to start in one corner and work your way to the front. As you paint, you won’t be able to “step” on that area without messing up the paint so start in the back corner and work your way to the front. The paint feels a little bit thicker than regular paint but is pretty easy to work with. Use the smaller roller for tight spaces and edges. In my case, I wanted to paint the tiles that lines the edges too, so I used the small roller for that as well. Once you are done with the base coat, per the direction on the rustoleum box, you want to wait 6 hours before applying the second step. NOTE, this coat is the only coat that will provide color so you want to make it look even. Originally I thought this was like primer and the top coat would provide color but it doesn’t. The top coat is clear and thinner than paint. Here is what the first coat looked like:

When I was done with the base coat it looked like this:

Step 4: Top Coat
The last step is to apply the top coat. The top coat is applied the same way as the base coat. Use the smaller roller for tight spaces and edges. Since it’s thinner than paint, it can glob in one spot so be sure to even it out if it drips or puddles.

Step 5: All done!!

Yay you did it! I loved how it came out and was impressed at how easy it was to work with. Here is the after:
